I started writing a post the other day about getting cross about something someone said the other day. It was a mildly boring technical topic to do with commercial contracts and public sector procurement of IT services. Part of the reason for writing it was to work out why the topic got me so cross.
After sleeping on a draft of that post, I realised the answer.
Because I’m stupid.
I get cross about things like this because I’m arrogant and stupid and think that I know the answer to everything and that I’m always right.
I hope that by writing this post, I’ll start to internalise the point that there is a lot I don’t know. Whenever I start to think that I’m right and someone else is wrong, I need to stop and explore that thing more deeply.
Yes, my life really is this exciting.
You could sort of see this as a companion to Hanlon’s Razor. Although the reference to stupidity is unhelpful. It’s more “just because you don’t agree with someone, don’t assume it’s because they’re wrong.”
